The first stitch was sown way way back when Make Do and Mend’s founder Sarah Bennett used to count the buttons in her grandma’s vintage button tin while her gran sewed the latest dress for her to wear.
From that moment on Sarah fell in love with fashion and sewing and particularly a passion for vintage and customising her own clothes. Her love of vintage clothing has seen her build a collection that has left her wardrobe bursting at the seams and includes many items she has altered and customised herself.
As well as her wardrobe, Sarah has filled her home with a collection of handpicked vintage pieces she loves – she’s a sucker for anything orange!
All this passion has led Sarah through a successful 10 year career in Theatrical Costume, in London’s West End and around the world. Working on shows such as War Horse, Les Miserable’s and Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake.
It’s since those early days that it has been Sarah’s dream to own her own vintage clothing company and share her passion with anyone that will listen. Now finally, Make Do and Mend is here to do just that.
With the ability to buy, learn and create, Sarah hopes that she can pass on a little of the love and passion that her Grandma gave her way back then…
But Make Do and Mend is not just another vintage clothing business, it’s an ethos and a way of living that is sustainable and economic too.
With workshops, classes and swap shops, Sarah’s goal is for Make Do and Mend to encourage people to wear pre-loved clothes that are well-made, unique and excellent quality. To love the clothes you already own and see the opportunity in them to create something new and amazing.
